Metroid is a 2026 American dystopian science fiction action film based on the video game franchise of the same name created and developed by Nintendo Entertainment. Produced by Legendary Pictures and The Stone Quarry and distributed by Universal Pictures, it is the first installment of the Metroid film series. Directed by Neill Blomkamp and written by Zack Snyder and Jeremy Slater, the film stars Cara Delevingne as Samus "Sam" Aran, along with Mahershala Ali, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ving Rhames, Willem Dafoe, Karl Urban, Andy Serkis, Paul Rudd, Bridget Moynahan, and Samuel L. Jackson. It serves as an origin story for Samus. Set primarily on the dystopian future in Planet Earth, Sam is a widowed hiking expedition member whose husband and son died recently from huntington's disease. Upon discovering a Metroid alien creature, she embarks on a perilous journey to find answers as to what this means. Metroid was released in theaters on December 10th, 2026; it received generally positive reviews from critics, while audience and fan receptions alike were raving, namely for its action, story, visuals, Delevingne's performance, Hans Zimmer's musical score, and faithfulness to the source material. It was also a box-office success and became the second-highest-grossing video game film of all time at 1.03 billion worldwide, making it Blomkamp's most successful film to date. A sequel was announced and is now in production.
