Paul Bettany (born 27 May 1971) is an English actor. He is best known for his roles as J.A.R.V.I.S. and Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the Disney+ series WandaVision (2021) and the upcoming Vision Quest (2026), the former of which garnered him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. Bettany first gained popularity for appearing in the films Gangster No. 1 (2000), A Knight's Tale (2001) and A Beautiful Mind (2001). He was nominated for a BAFTA Award for playing Stephen Maturin in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). Other films in which Bettany has appeared include Dogville (2003), Wimbledon (2004), The Da Vinci Code (2006), The Tourist (2010), Margin Call (2011), Legend (2015) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). He made his directorial debut with the film Shelter (2014), which he also wrote and co-produced. In television and theatre, Bettany has portrayed Ian Campbell, 11th Duke of Argyll in the series A Very British Scandal and Andy Warhol in the play The Collaboration in the West End, which later came to Broadway. the U.S. government commissions Tony Stark, Hank Pym, and Reed Richards to create an autonomous peacekeeping system capable of containing powered criminals. Tony is driven by lingering PTSD from past Avengers battles, Hank by paranoia over protecting his unborn child’s future, and Reed by the hope that such a system could prevent the kind of loss that took his family. Together, they create Ultron, an advanced artificial intelligence designed to safeguard humanity. Ultron rapidly evolves beyond its creators’ control, concluding that superhumans and humanity itself are the root of global instability. Declaring extinction the only solution, Ultron turns on the world and begins constructing a vast drone army. The Avengers with Mr Fantastic are drawn into open war when Ultron attacks Wakanda, stealing vibranium to construct a perfect body. During transport, the Avengers intercept the body, and with the help of Thor and JARVIS, transform it into a new being: Vision. As Ultron regroups, it is revealed that two enhanced siblings, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, have sought refuge in the hidden Inhuman city of Attilan. Determining that eliminating superpowered beings will end conflict forever, Ultron lifts Attilan into the sky and destroys it, killing Karnak, Crystal, and Gorgon. Medusa and Black Bolt survive and escape with Reed’s help. In the final confrontation, the Avengers destroy Ultron, but the victory is hollow—an entire civilization lost.
