The chief constable of Bristol at the start of the series, Hawley Friendly was the enforcer of Andrew McCluskie's rule over the city and a corrupt policeman, who undermined Gustavo Aldama. When Nigel Hyde joins the police, Friendly hopes to break him in, unaware he and Belle Aldama will turn the tables on him.
