In 1943, the young Italian-American Vito Scaletta is arrested on charges of robbing a jewelry store along with his friend, Joe Barbaro. As the United States had entered World War II, Vito had two alternatives: be imprisoned or serve in the war. Choosing the second alternative, Vito spends two years in the army, until he is sent back home after being shot and wounded. Upon returning in February 1945, Vito discovers that his late father had left an almost unpayable debt to his mother and sister. Meeting up with Joe Barbaro, who was working for the Clemente mafia, Vito looks for an opportunity to pay off his father's debt without having to work for so long. Joe offers Vito some jobs in the Clemente mafia, and little by little Vito enters the underworld of the mafia.
