When disaster strikes the household, demolishing countless hopes and dreams and driving the family into poverty, Laura must step up to her new role as eldest daughter and secondary "man" of the house. Through the difficult journey to Dakota, where the family begins a strange new life, she works extra hard to help her parents and care for her three sisters. While she knows that she must not be selfish, Laura's greatest dread is the mounting expectation for her to become a schoolteacher, now that Mary is incapable of doing so. But the prospect of extra money is too great to resist...and who knows? Maybe these unfortunate circumstances may introduce some romance into her life!
