In 19th century France, in the midst of the French Revolution, a convict named Jean Valjean is released from prison on parole. He is bitter and jaded, but upon meeting a kind bishop, he commits his soul to God and devotes himself to living a good life. He breaks parole and makes a new life for himself, but is now being hunted by his parole officer, Javert. Jean Valjean meets Fantine, a young, dying woman with no means to pay for her child, Cosette. After Fantine's death, Jean Valjean rescues Cosette from the abusive Thenardiers, and she becomes the light of his life. As the years go on, Javert remains persistent, determined to find the escaped convict. The French Revolution continues to rise, and Marius Pontmercy and the friends of the ABC Cafe plan their fight, led by Enjolras. Culminating in a desperate fight for freedom, Les Mis is a story of love, loss, devotion, and hope, as each character seeks out their purpose.
