Valjean is imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's child. After his release, he breaks parole and starts a new life with the help of a kind bishop. Valjean becomes wealthy and adopts Cosette, but Javert continues to hunt him down. The two eventually end up in Paris during the French Revolution, where they are swept up in the social and political struggles
