Sokka is the eldest son of Hakoda, the chief of the Southen Water Tribe, and the eldest brother of Katara, the tribe's last Waterbender. Left in charge of the tribe by his father, Sokka is determined to be a good leader to his people. However when Katara decided she wanted to visit the Northern Water Tribe to become a better Waterbender, he (albeit reluctantly) chose to accompany her. This brought them to Arata Hatsui, who was on the run from Ozai.
