Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill(b. 30 November 1874) is a British author, politician and military officer. After a career in the army and then as a popular war correspondent, Churchill was first elected to Parliament in 1900 as a Conservative though later defected to the Liberal Party. As First Lord of the Admiralty during the Great War, he oversaw the Gallipoli campaign, but after it proved a disaster, he was demoted to Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He resigned office in November 1915 and joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers on the Western Front for six months before he returned to government, in 1917. Under David Lloyd George he served successively as Minister of Munitions.
