Paul von Hindenburg (2 October 1847 - 2 August 1934) was a German Field Marshal who, together with his deputy Erich Ludendorff, led the Imperial German Army and coordinated the Central Powers' war effort during the Weltkrieg, for which he is widely regarded as one of the men who lead Germany to victory in 1919. A crushing series of victories against the Russians turned him into a national hero and the center of a massive personality cult, with his popularity eventually eclipsing that of the mostly passive Kaiser.
