Michael Crichton's groundbreaking novel follows a team of scientists and entrepreneurs who attempt to create the world's first dinosaur theme park on a remote island off Costa Rica. Using recovered dinosaur DNA, billionaire John Hammond has engineered living, breathing prehistoric creatures and built an elaborate facility to showcase them. When mathematician Ian Malcolm, paleontologist Alan Grant, and paleobotanist Ellie Sattler arrive to tour the park before its opening, they discover that the park's security systems are far more fragile than anyone realized. As a tropical storm approaches and a disgruntled employee sabotages the power grid, the dinosaurs escape their enclosures. What begins as a controlled tour becomes a desperate fight for survival as the team must navigate an island populated by intelligent, hungry predators. The novel explores themes of chaos theory, humanity's hubris in attempting to control nature, and the unpredictable consequences of scientific ambition. Crichton masterfully blends hard science with edge-of-your-seat adventure, creating a thrilling exploration of what happens when humans play God.
