Mrs. Pearce is the elderly Irish church cleaner who shuffles through Father Redondo's massacre scenes without quite noticing. Her hearing is failing. Her eyesight is failing. Her memory is failing. She mistakes a hacked-up corpse for a turkey and blood for spilled communion wine. She's comic relief, but beneath the humor is something tragic—an old woman losing her grip on reality while surrounded by evil she can no longer perceive. She asks Redondo if he'd like tea while he's still holding the axe. She shuffles off looking for her mop. She never knows how close she came to dying. And that's probably mercy.
