The corpulent, decadent Jeddak of the Tharks, Tal Hajus is a tyrant who rules through fear and cruelty. A volatile, unpredictable monster—capable of casual sadism one moment and explosive rage the next. He keeps a pet Banth, a ten-legged Martian tiger, and delights in torturing prisoners. His rule has corrupted Thark society, separating children from parents and teaching only war. When Tars Tarkas challenges him for the throne, Tal unleashes a feral, terrifying fury that makes his eventual defeat all the more satisfying.
