Their only daughter-a young girl named Jane-decides to save the family and decides to marry a rich Lord named Edward Parker, who is much older than her. He in return agrees to support her family financially. The girl is very unhappy in this marriage. Her husband restricts her, treats her as property and even as a servant. However, Jane meets his servant - a young boy named Clarence. Under Lord Parker's inattention, they spend every free moment with each other and eventually fall in love. One day Lord Parker has to leave for an important meeting and orders Clarence to watch over Jane. When Lord disappears, the boy tells her to run away together, but she knows that if her husband finds out about the escape, he will stop supporting her family financially.
