While facing middle-age, Bob faces a condition (possibly severe gout) that might prevent him from doing superhero stuff forever, so he has to stick with his new office job for now, which makes him irritable. In the climax of the movie, he would be able to drop in at the last minute and help everyone in the ensuing fight. He will be cured and stay a superhero for as long as he likes.
