Years after a devastating pandemic wipes out most of humanity, Robert Neville, a former military scientist, lives alone in an abandoned New York City. By day, he searches the empty streets for food, supplies, and other survivors while studying the infected in hopes of finding a cure. By night, he barricades himself inside his home as the infected emerge from hiding. Neville believes they are little more than savage creatures driven by instinct, and he has devoted what remains of his life to finding a way to destroy the disease. But as Neville's research progresses, he begins to notice something disturbing: the infected are changing. They are learning, communicating, forming relationships, and organizing themselves into a functioning society. When Neville encounters evidence that they have begun deliberately tracking and studying him, he realizes the truth may be far worse than the apocalypse itself. Humanity isn't simply fighting to survive—the world is changing around him, and the infected may be the next stage of human evolution. To them, Neville is no longer a survivor. He is the monster.
