In the Viking village of Berk, dragons frequently attack, stealing livestock and endangering villagers. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the 16-year-old outcast son of chieftain Stoick the Vast, is learning blacksmithing from Gobber, creating mechanical devices to overcome his physical weakness, though they often cause disasters. During a recent dragon raid, Hiccup shoots down a rare dragon called the Night Fury with a bolas launcher, but no one believes him. Determined to prove himself, he enters the forest to kill the Night Fury he shot. However, when he finds the creature trapped, he hesitates to strike and ultimately frees it, surprising himself when the dragon spares him before fleeing.
