He grew intimate feelings for Lori and led her and her son to safety during the initial outbreak. Shane was the leader of the Atlanta Survivor Camp before sharing the role with his sheriff's deputy partner, Rick. Shane and Rick worked together trying to keep the people in the group alive. He believed that the government would save them all and refused to leave the camp, not wanting to take risks. However, this resulted in the death of two of their group members, which led to a disagreement with Rick who insisted that they needed to find a new place to be safe. Then he loses his chance to be with Lori and thinking that he has nothing left in this world, Shane is going to kill Rick blaming him for all the problems. But he fails to do this due to Carl's intervention by shooting Shane.
