Carl "CJ" Johnson returns to Los Santos, in the fictional state of San Andreas, in 1992, after five years, for his mother's funeral. He discovers his city disintegrated by corruption, crime, and gang warfare, exacerbated by the disappearance of his former gang, the Grove Street Families. CJ is forced to fight to save his family and friends, regain control of the streets of Los Santos, and restore his family's honor, embarking on a journey that spans the state, confronting corrupt police, rivals, and the mafia.
