Due to an overpopulation crisis, the kingdom of Hell undergoes an annual purge, where angels descend from Heaven and slaughter demons to curb the population. Finding this solution quite upsetting and wishing to find a more peaceful option, Princess Charlotte "Charlie" Magne Morningstar, a kindhearted, optimistic demon and heir to the throne, sets about fulfilling her seemingly impossible dream of opening up a hotel called the "Happy Hotel", which aims to rehabilitate sinners and transform them into redeemed souls and give them a chance to ascend to Heaven. However, when her proposal on live TV goes horribly wrong, it does attract the attention of a very powerful demon named Alastor, who wishes to help Charlie run the hotel for his amusement despite his own beliefs in redemption. With the help of her devoted manager Vaggie and their reluctant first patron, pornographic film actor Angel Dust, she's determined to make her dream become a reality.
