Seeking the Deathly Hallows and acquiring the Elder Wand, he recruited an army of followers and terrorised the Wizarding World. He was eventually defeated by Dumbledore in a legendary duel and imprisoned in Nurmengard, ironically a prison he built to contain his enemies.
