Long before Peter Quill ever called himself Star-Lord, another team proudly carried the name of Guardians of the Galaxy. Led by Yondu, Martinex, Captain Charlie-27, Starhawk, and Aleta, the legendary heroes answer a distress call on Xandar, only to find themselves caught between the Kree and Skrull empires. When the Guardians stand with the innocent - and pay the ultimate price as Ronan annihilates both them and countless Nova Corps defenders. Their sacrifice echoes across the stars. Far from the battlefield, the reckless outlaw Peter Quill stumbles from one score to the next until a chance encounter with Rocket and Groot sends him on an adventure far bigger than fortune. Along the way, the unlikely rogue gathers an extraordinary band of allies, including the enigmatic Adam Warlock, the empathic Mantis, and Nova, the last survivor of Xandar's massacre, whose thirst for justice burns brighter than ever. Their journey places them in the sights of two of the universe's most dangerous cosmic beings: the Grandmaster and his brother, the Collector. Obsessed with possessing everything existence has to offer; the brothers have already begun collecting the legendary Infinity Gems and now seek the Soul Gem embedded within Adam Warlock himself. To save their friend, the team wagers everything in one of the Grandmaster's deadly games. Their prize: the Power Gem. Their opponent: Ronan the Accuser. As old wounds resurface and new bonds are forged, the misfits learn what it truly means to fight for one another. Together they overcome Ronan, earning the Power Gem and proving that family is forged through loyalty, not blood. Sparing Ronan at the Grandmaster's whim leaves the Kree warlord indebted to a far greater evil, while Peter and his companions embrace a new purpose. The galaxy has lost one generation of Guardians. Now, a new one rises.
