Weeks after the events of *First Light*, Hal Jordan has gained some experience as a Green Lantern, though he remains impulsive. The Corps is on high alert: a Guardian has been murdered, and the culprit is unknown. Sinestro—the most respected Lantern in the sector and Hal’s mentor—leads the investigation. As Hal attempts to carry out his duties while maintaining his life on Earth with Carol Ferris, he begins to notice that Sinestro is making increasingly harsh decisions. Sinestro has become convinced that the Guardians are too weak to protect the universe and that order can only be maintained through fear. In secret, he forges his first yellow power ring and a corresponding power battery, fueled by the terror of those around him. There is no Sinestro Corps yet—just one man armed with a new, formidable weapon. When Hal discovers the truth, he confronts his former mentor. The clash is personal rather than merely cosmic: will against fear, master against student. Hal defeats Sinestro, who ends up in an interstellar prison, but the victory leaves a bitter aftertaste: Hal has lost the person who believed in him most.
