After Green Lantern Abin Sur learns of the forbidden Blackest Night prophecy, he becomes obsessed with preventing the future it predicts: the War of Light, the fall of the Green Lantern Corps, and the eventual end of life in the universe. The prophecy also foretells Abin's own death and the rise of his successor as the greatest Green Lantern to ever live. When Abin brings the dangerous Atrocitus to Earth, Atrocitus escapes and mortally wounds him with the Cosmic Divining Rod. Abin's ring chooses test pilot Hal Jordan as his successor, forcing Hal into a world he barely understands. As Hal struggles to master his new powers, Sinestro is sent to train him and investigate Atrocitus. The two initially clash but gradually become genuine friends while hunting him down. Meanwhile, Atrocitus discovers William Hand, a disturbed coroner obsessed with death, and convinces him that his dark impulses are part of a greater destiny. When Atrocitus gives William the Cosmic Divining Rod, William embraces his obsession with death and becomes increasingly dangerous. During a confrontation with Hal and Sinestro, Atrocitus shows Sinestro a terrifying vision of his future as the leader of the Yellow Lanterns fighting against Hal, leaving him distracted while William and Atrocitus nearly kill Hal. Broken and afraid for the first time, Hal returns to his younger brother Jim, who reminds him of the determination and willpower that have always defined him. Inspired by Jim, Hal accepts his responsibility as a hero and returns to face William, who has transformed himself into Black Hand and begun terrorizing Coast City. While Sinestro defeats Atrocitus, Hal fights Black Hand while protecting civilians and ultimately defeats him. With Atrocitus captured and Black Hand arrested, Hal says goodbye to his family and Carol before leaving Earth with Sinestro to join the Green Lantern Corps, unaware that the Blackest Night prophecy—and Sinestro's vision—are only beginning to unfold.
