Los Santos, 1992. A city on the brink of collapse, divided by gang wars, police corruption, and crack cocaine trafficking. Carl "CJ" Johnson, a former gangster who fled to the East Coast to escape his past, is forced to return home for the funeral of his mother, murdered in a drive-by shooting.
Upon arriving, he is immediately framed by Frank Tenpenny, the corrupt and sociopathic leader of the police's C.R.A.S.H. unit, who blackmails CJ into doing the police's dirty work. CJ finds his old family, the Grove Street Families, in ruins. His brother Sweet blames him for the decline, his childhood friends Ryder and Big Smoke seem to be hiding secrets, and the territory has been taken over by rival Ballas. The narrative follows CJ's journey to clear his name, save his family, and reclaim the streets, uncovering a conspiracy that links gang violence to the highest levels of power. It's a story of loyalty, betrayal, and the struggle to escape the ghetto without losing one's soul.
