Johnathon Richard Thomas Blaze was a motorcycle stunting artist who agreed to host Zarathos' soul in exchange for the salvation of Barton Blaze, Blaze's biological father and owner of the motorcycle exhibition site. This Ghost Rider was part of the supergroup known as Champions in the 70s, along with Angel, Iceman, Black Widow, Hercules and Black Star. Roxanne Simpson, the natural daughter of "Crash" Simpson, was the first person to discover that Ghost Rider and Johnny Blaze were the same person. For a long time, Roxanne's strength of love was the only thing that kept Satan away from the Ghost Rider. Satan, however, managed to deceive her by using false images of her late father. As soon as Roxanne removed the protection, Satan took over the Rider's powers. However, Blaze managed to get away with the intervention of Daimon Hellstrom, the son of Satan, who had become an exorcist on Earth. Some time later, Blaze managed to imprison Zarathos in a jewel called the Spiritual Crystal. Free from the demon, Johnny still had the powers but after some time Zarathos returned so Johnny fled to the other side of the world.
