A 39-year-old widower, he is harsh and sometimes violent. He is an aristocrat and becomes Elise's husband. When he learns of her affair with Ludwig, he beats up her beloved but she stops him and asks him to take him to a doctor, to which he reluctantly agrees. He tells the doctor that Ludwig's condition is caused by a fall down the stairs.
