Jessica Drew has acquired bizarre powers as a consequence of her enigmatic life story that led her to become the dark angel vigilante and private investigator known as Spider-Woman. Through means provided by the High Evolutionary, an ill Drew was experimented on by her own father as an infant in a process that added the genome of a spider to her own. This granted her increased strength and agility, the power of generating venom blasts, and the ability to release disruptive pheromones. As an additional consequence, she lost many years of her life trapped in a coma. Revived as an adult,[24][1] she was soon manipulated by Hydra into becoming one of their operatives. After attacking S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury, she realized she served corrupted forces and defected.[2] As an unconventional individual, Spider-Woman decided to harness her pain by using her powers for justice.[24] In her civilian persona, Jessica Drew acted as a private investigator.[28] After beating death, Drew lost her powers.[29] Despite still proving to be a formidable fighter,[16] she considered restoring her powers. Hydra contacted her to perform a re-empowering procedure in exchange for her loyalty.[30] This put the vulnerable Jessica Drew in the clutches of the shapeshifting aliens Skrulls. Their queen impersonated her, acting as a deep undercover agent within the Avengers to bring about an invasion and conquest of Earth.[31] The Avengers destroyed the Skrulls[32] and the real Spider-Woman gained a position in the super-heroic community as a valuable player.[33][34][19]
