Maria Rainer is one of the two protagonists from the 1959 Rogers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music, as well as its 1965 movie adaptation. Originally a postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, she becomes the governess for the children of Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy back into their lives, and eventually falls in love with and marries the Captain himself.
She is based on Maria Augusta von Trapp (née Kutschera), stepmother and matriarch of the Trapp family, who performed as a singing group from the 1930s to the 1950s.
