Dumbo II was originally conceived as a direct sequel to Disney's beloved classic, with early development showcased in the 2001 "60th Anniversary Edition" DVD of Dumbo. The sequel, to be directed by Robert C. Ramirez, would have followed Dumbo and his circus friends—chaotic twin bears Claude and Lolly, curious zebra Dot, independent hippo Godfry, and adventurous ostrich Penny—as they navigated a sprawling city after being left behind by their travelling circus. Each animal was intended to represent a distinct stage of childhood, and the story aimed to explain the fate of Dumbo's father, Mr. Jumbo. The narrative was set to begin immediately after the events of the original film. However, John Lasseter cancelled the project in 2006 upon becoming Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. A new 2D version by Walt Disney Animation Studios could recapture the original’s charm, utilising hand-drawn animation to bring Dumbo and his friends' adventures to life. This updated take would focus on heartfelt storytelling, vivid cityscapes, and the emotional journey of Dumbo as he seeks both his family and a sense of belonging, while visually celebrating the unique personalities and metaphorical stages of childhood embodied by his companions.
