Hijikata Toshizo (土方歳三, Hijikata Toshizō) was once the feared “demon” vice commander of the Shinsengumi, an elite Japanese police force that patrolled the imperial capital of Kyoto in the nineteenth century. His pledge to protect the Tokugawa regime eventually cost him his life at the Battle of Hakodate, the final battle of the Boshin War, where he was shot to death from behind while leading his fellow officers on horseback. As an End, Hijikata can manifest ghostly images of his former comrades to cut down his enemies. He serves as the main rival of Shimazu Toyohisa.
