In a world, where toys come to life when their owners aren't around, Sheriff Woody Pride, an old cowboy doll with a pull-string vocalizer and the favorite toy of young Andy Davis, is the unofficial leader of the rest of Andy's toys. Woody's world is turned upside down when Andy receives a trendy new "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" toy for his birthday, threatening both his status as Andy's favorite toy and his popularity among the others. Most annoying of all, Buzz genuinely believes he's a Space Ranger and, therefore, can't appreciate Andy's love the way Woody does. Woody attempts to make Buzz "accidentally" fall behind Andy's desk so Andy won't be able to find him. In the process, Buzz is knocked out the window by actual accident, causing the others to assume foul play and turn their backs on Woody. Then, when Andy takes Woody with him to dinner at Pizza Planet, Buzz catches up and the two become separated from Andy during a confrontation. In their attempts to get back to Andy, the two instead wind up in the possession of his sadistic toy-mutilating next door neighbor Sid Phillips. With Andy's family moving in a couple of days, Woody and Buzz need to learn to work together to get back home as soon as possible and, in the process, discover that they've got a friend in each other.
