The first installment of the Disney Parks Cinematic Universe shows us the supernatural origins of the most haunted mansion in America. After returning to the family mansion in search of his ancestors' treasure, Edward hires the clairvoyant Madame Leota to help him in his search. They begin a relationship and have a daughter. Edward despairs because he's engaged to circus artist Lilian O'Malley, and cuts ties with Leota. Vengeful, Leota curses Lilian who ends up dying tragically. With no money and no success in finding the treasure, Edward marries his cousin Emily Cavenaugh. Leota locks the woman inside a trunk in the attic and suffocates her to death. When Edward discovers Leota's schemes, he decides to flee from Hudson River Valley. Obsessed with having Edward all to herself, Leota casts a curse on Gracey Manor and seals all its exits. Her plan is to trap him forever inside her crystal ball. To avoid his fate, Edward hangs himself from the vaulted ceiling of the mansion's entrance hall and the spell ricochets, trapping Leota forever inside her crystal ball.
