CBS had wanted to go in another direction with the Doctor Who series. The actor that portrayed the 1st Doctor was reportedly hard to work with, so CBS brought in a more comedic, younger, and more accessible Doctor. This Doctor proved to be very popular and lasted from 1964 - 1965 when CBS was ordered to make the show more action oriented.
