Born a Transylvanian nobleman, Karl Mordo traveled to the Ancient One's monestary to learn the ways of magic, becoming a powerful sorcerer. However, Mordo became power hungry and ambitious, and when Stephen Strange also became a student of the Ancient One, gaining their master's favor, his jealousy drove Mordo to attempt an assassination on the Ancient One, to which Strange prevented. Karl Mordo escaped the monastery, defecting to and becoming the main acolyte to his new demonic master, Dormammu, who rules the Dark Dimension, while plotting his revenge upon his rival, Dr. Strange, and the Ancient One.
