As he was about to start medical school, Khalid Nassour crosses paths with the Helmet of Nabu at the Brooklyn Museum. The helmet begins to speak to him. Frightened, Khalid returns home. A day filled with strange events begins, including his cat claiming to be the incarnation of the goddess Bastet. Khalid returns to the museum to retrieve the helmet and becomes the New Dr. Fate. Still thinking he's in some kind of trip, Khalid ends up facing the god Anubis. Managing to defeat Anubis with the helmet's power, Khalid listens to the helmet, which tells him to "save the world" by undoing the damage caused by Anubis. Khalid receives a visit from his uncle, Kent Nelson, accompanied by a monkey wielding a sword. Nelson takes Khalid under his wing, explaining that magic isn't the same for everyone. Meanwhile, Argus agent Veronica Bissette becomes possessed by the agent of chaos, Xanadoth. Khalid must now confront Xanadoth while also facing the scrutiny of the various Lords of Order, many of whom disagree with Khalid being chosen as the new host of Nabu. During the battle with Xanadoth, Khalid realizes that Nabu has been manipulating him from the beginning: Anubis wasn't trying to destroy the world, but rather prevent the Lords of Order from removing magic from it. After defeating Xanadoth, he learns that Nabu is responsible for the deaths of the Lords of Balance and vows to do everything in his power to prevent Nabu from carrying out his plans one day.
