The Mass Effect story follows Commander Shepard, an elite human soldier who must unite the galaxy's diverse alien races to defend against a colossal, ancient threat known as the Reapers. In the year 2183, after discovering a Prothean beacon and battling a rogue Spectre named Saren, Shepard uncovers the Reapers' ancient plan to systematically destroy all advanced organic life in the galaxy every 50,000 years. Shepard assembles a crew, travels across the galaxy, makes difficult choices that shape the narrative, and ultimately confronts the Reapers to save the galaxy.
