The Deus Ex series is set in a dystopian future where secretive organizations vie for global control amidst rapid technological advancements and societal upheaval. In the prequels, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, players follow Adam Jensen, a security specialist who undergoes mechanical augmentation after a catastrophic attack. Jensen becomes embroiled in conflicts between powerful corporations, the Illuminati, and augmented rights groups, all while confronting ethical dilemmas surrounding human enhancement. The original Deus Ex introduces JC Denton, a nano-augmented agent of UNATCO in 2052, tasked with combating terrorism but soon uncovering conspiracies involving the Gray Death pandemic and factions like Majestic 12. His choices lead to multiple possible outcomes, including the collapse of global communications or merging with an AI to impose a new world order. Deus Ex: Invisible War, set two decades later, features Alex D, a clone of Denton, navigating a world still reeling from previous events, where various factions, including remnants of the Illuminati and a Denton-led group, vie for dominance. Throughout the series, players' decisions critically influence the narrative, exploring themes of control, freedom, and the ethical implications of human augmentation.
