Although not officially part of the space shuttle fleet, every orbiter that came after her included her as an honorary member of the fleet. Even though she did not make it into space at first or at all, Enterprise was the first to fly at all during the Approach and Landing Tests Program (ALTP) at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Like Columbia; Enterprise is straightforward, logical, wise and caring. By comparison to the motherly serious Columbia, however; Enterprise is like the more free-spirited and doting aunt who makes time for everyone including her sisters Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. When both her sisters Challenger and Columbia died in their respective tragic accidents, NASA would always call upon Enterprise's services to aid in determining and solving what caused their deaths and how to prevent more lives from being lost. Whenever Enterprise was in town, she would stop by to check up on her sisters to see how they are getting on. She understood the reason why NASA engineers eschewed converting her to spaceflight-ready status and chose to be the best sister/aunt she could for Challenger and Endeavour when they were built. Every shuttle in the fleet regarded Enterprise as their mother figure and would just be glad to spend time with her. Along with Columbia, Challenger and Discovery; Enterprise is one of only four shuttles to have ever been crewed by some of the former Apollo astronauts.
