It's 2030. Life in Los Angeles is like hell. Chaos, lawlessness and crime have triumphed over decency and order. One of the toughest and most successful police officers is Sergeant John Spartan, who in three years on the force has caught a thousand criminals. He was aptly nicknamed Demolition Man for his demolition methods. But just as he decides to take out the cynical killer Simon Phoenix, a building explodes with three dozen hostages. Since no one knows that the hostages were already dead when the explosion occurred, John Spartan is sentenced to 70 years of cryo-prison, just like Phoenix. The year is 2055. Life in the megalopolis of San Angeles resembles paradise. Decency and order have triumphed over crime and chaos. There hasn't been a murder in over fifteen years, and a firearm can only be seen in a museum. Society has also changed. is exclusively non-contact, there are fines for bad language, people avoid physical contact and are polite at all times. They don't salt, pepper, eat meat and generally live very healthy lives. And into such a world is thawed the psychopath Simon Phoenix. The softened police officers, who have long since gotten used to dealing with crime, can't handle him, so they need to find someone who can. There's only one - John Spartan. But even he's on ice. So, by order of the police department, he's called back to life.
