Acrobat Boston Brandt is assassinated during a trapeze performance. Unaware of his death, he only realizes it by observing the audience's reaction. Rama Kushna, the goddess of The Presence, informs Deadman that he can only return to the world of the living after bringing his assassin to justice. Brandt then contacts John Constantine. The duo manages to solve Brandt's murder, but he remains a ghost. The Master, a monk from Nanda Parbat, reveals to Brandt that the death he must avenge is not his own but that of the Master. This occurs during an attack by Enchantress and The Shade on Nanda Parbat to steal the Heart of Nanda Parbat, an artifact containing the souls of all the city's monks. Rama Kushna informs Deadman that he must now find the Heart to save the monks and regain his own body. Brandt then seeks to confront The Shade and Enchantress. With the help of Madame Xanadu, Deadman manages to contact his fiancée, Ann Colby, and find The Shade and Enchantress, who are delivering the Heart of Nanda Parbat to Merlin. By taking control of Enchantress's body, Brandt inadvertently kills The Shade. Rama Kushna informs Deadman that his reckless actions are upsetting the balance of karma, even though he succeeded in restoring the monks' souls. Deadman must continue his work on Earth to balance the scales, much to his dismay. The film features a post-credits scene in which Merlin explains to Neron that his disciples have failed so far. Neron decides to take matters into his own hands.
