Set in the 26th century in a grim, dystopian future, the story centers around a massive interstellar mining vessel, the USG Ishimura, on a deep-space assignment to a remote planet known as Aegis VII. During their operations, the crew discovers and retrieves an ancient, enigmatic alien artifact known as the Marker, which is held sacred by the religious movement called Unitology. Upon bringing the Marker aboard the Ishimura, the object unleashes a terrifying epidemic. A mysterious infection rapidly spreads, reanimating and transforming human corpses into horrific and aggressive mutant creatures called Necromorphs.
