In this film, Krypton does not explode, but it is deserted due to being attacked by the world-collector Brainiac. All the good people of Krypton try to leave, but General Zod and his crew make deal with Brainiac that if they kill everyone else then he will give the people who helped him assured refuge on his own planet. They agreed to this deal since it was uncertain whether leaving Krypton in the untested ships would get them to a safe planet or not. The only survivor besides Zod and his crew after the massacre is Kal-El, who Jor-El and Lara had just managed to get into one of the ships before Zod got to him. The ship lands on Earth, where Kal grows up to become Superman and the persona of Clark Kent. Zod and his crew are still carrying out Brainiac's will as he asks them to do more and more before he gives them refuge, and they are beginning to realise that Brainiac is just using them and will never give them anything. However, when Ursa stands up to him about this, he kills her in front of them to make a point that they have no choice but to obey him. He then tells them to attack the Earth so he can add it to his collection without resistance, and in particular tells Zod to go after Superman, since he is the biggest threat to Brainiac. Zod unwillingly obeys but quickly realises that he can't beat Superman, and so Brainiac steps in to finish it himself. However, Superman convinces Zod and his crew to help him fight Brainiac, and they win by working together as a team.
