A weathered, gruff old man who sells newspapers on a street corner and keeps a quiet eye on the young black boy who reads comics by his stand. Bernard is the voice of ordinary New York—weary, unimpressed, and decent in ways he doesn't advertise. When the sky turns white over Manhattan, he reaches instinctively for the boy's hand. His silhouette, burned into a wall, is the film's most human image.
