Justin Hurwitz (born January 22nd, 1985) is an American film composer and television writer. He is best known for his longtime collaboration with director Damien Chazelle, scoring each of his films: Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench (2009), Whiplash (2014), La La Land (2016), First Man (2018), and Babylon (2022). For La La Land, Hurwitz won two Academy Awards, Best Original Score and Best Original Song (for "City of Stars"), as well as Golden Globe Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music. He has won two Grammy Awards for La La Land, one for Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media and another for Best Score Soundtrack For Original Media. He won two additional Golden Globes for Original Score for First Man and Babylon. Jack Hart and Theo Ramires are young, wandering musicians travelling the American backroads in 1967, scraping by on tiny gigs and cheap breakfasts. Their bluesy‑indie sound is raw but full of heart, and their friendship is the anchor of their drifting lives. Everything changes when they meet Allison “Allie” Pond at Jim Hardy’s bar — a witty, wonder‑filled drifter who joins their travels and becomes the missing piece of their makeshift family. Their music deepens, their joy grows, and Jack and Allie fall quietly, naturally in love. But when talent scout Dan Cole and ruthless record executive Evelyn Stone offer Jack a shot at fame, he takes it. The industry reshapes him, pushing Theo aside and dimming Allie’s spark. Heartbroken, Allie returns home to her sister Amelia and Amelia’s partner Victor, settling into a stable but joyless life. Theo and Allie try to stay close, but without Jack, their bond becomes a painful reminder of what they lost. Jack spirals under fame’s weight until his hero, Chuck Weathers, warns him of the cost. Jack walks away and returns to Jim’s, where he finally confronts the truth: he abandoned the people who made him whole. He finds Allie and apologises honestly, offering not promises but music — for her, for Theo, for joy. Allie chooses to risk her heart again.
