Nitrus Brio, commonly called N. Brio, is a recurring antagonist in the Crash Bandicoot series. He is generally depicted as an evil scientist who often works with Neo Cortex, but sometimes works in opposition to him instead. N. Brio debuted in the first Crash Bandicoot game as Neo Cortex's right-hand man and inventor of the Evolvo-Ray, a device used to create Cortex's army of mutant animals, including Crash Bandicoot.[2] Crash would later face off against N. Brio in order to rescue his girlfriend, Tawna Bandicoot. In the sequel, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, N. Brio returns to stop Crash from helping Cortex after the latter betrayed him, eventually helping Crash to stop Cortex's evil plot in the game's true ending. This development would influence his relationship with Cortex in later games such as Crash: Mind Over Mutant and Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, with the latter characterizing him as having a mutinous streak. Cortex Strikes Back also introduces N. Gin, another evil scientist who would replace N. Brio as Cortex's right-hand in most games afterwards. N. Brio is skilled in chemistry and biology; his name, a pun on the word "embryo", is in reference to this. Using potions, as well as devices such as the Evolvo-Ray and NV, he is able to create enemy creatures or mutate them in various ways. He is also able to use potions to mutate himself into different forms, the most common one being a larger and muscular version of himself. N. Brio was originally designed as a foil to Neo Cortex; his meekness in the first game and talent in biology were made to contrast Cortex's overconfidence and technological prowess, as noted in the game's development material.
