Private Charles Godfrey, (pronounced God-free) portrayed by Arnold Ridley OBE (7 January 1896-12 March 1984) was a retired shop assistant (Civil Service Stores) from Walmington-on-Sea. He later became a private in, and the medical orderly of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard. He was sometimes referred to by his fellow platoon members (particularly Joe Walker) as "Charlie".
