Captain George Mainwaring, (pronounced "Man-er-ing", though Captain Square pronounces it as spelt: "Main-waring"), portrayed by Arthur Lowe (22 September 1915-15 April 1982) was the bank manager of the Walmington-on-Sea branch of Swallow Bank. He later became the Captain of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard Platoon.
