The Jellicle Ball is a high-stakes song competition to see who will be chosen by Old Deuteronomy to ascend to the Heaviside Layer. This gives the character introductions a clear purpose, but it also causes bickering among the Jellicles as they vie for the Heaviside Layer. Grizabella, an old and mangy cat, was cast out for her abandonment of her kittens, Munkustrap and Rum Tum Tugger, and subsequent failed attempts at stardom. She seeks to be redeemed by the Jellicles to provide closure for her past. Meanwhile, Macavity, motivated by his jealousy towards his younger brother Munkustrap and aided by Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, plans to kidnap Old Deuteronomy and seize control of the Jellicle Ball for his selfish gains. Therefore, the Jellicle Cats must unite to save their leader from danger and their most sacred tradition from being ruined while redeeming Grizabella.
