Hundreds of years before Captain America, there was Captain Britain, the UK's most legendary knight and protector, who led the British people through great conflicts like the Anglo-Saxon wars. Founding the Captain Britain Corps, an order sworn to defend the realm and the fabric of reality itself. Over the centuries, as the UK grew more peaceful, the role of Captain Britain became less needed and eventually faded into legend, becoming a folk tale along the lines of Robin Hood. What didn't help was that Captain America, a role that was based on Captain Britain, overshadowed him. In the present day, Brian Braddock, a 24-year-old drifter from Maldon, struggling with homelessness, and his family's disconnect after his father disappeared two years prior, finds his life shifted when the British government recruits him.
